Friday 26 August 2016

We woke up to sunshine this morning.  One day it’s autumn then the next day back to summer!
I went for a walk and shop in Milnbridge, the little town where we were moored.  From the canal there doesn’t appear to be much around but once you start walking you realise that there is road upon road of houses all built into the side of the hills.

We are booked to go through the guillotine lock at 8.30am tomorrow morning so we need to get to Slaithwaite where we can stop two locks short.

As we left Milnbridge our surroundings became quite rural going through wooded areas, most of the locks here have pretty stone bridges across enabling whoever is doing the locks (me) to get across to the other side.  Some of the lock gates are very close to the edge of the wall so you have to be careful that the weight of the gate doesn’t knock you over the edge when you are opening and closing them!

Getting into the locks continued to be a challenge for Steve as the by-waters (or back-waters – not sure what they are called) were so strong in places that at one lock it pushed the boat over so violently that it nearly got wedged!  By the end of the day he had the hang of what to do – slowly approach then full throttle through it and quick into reverse as soon as he was in the lock to save hitting the cill at the other end!  At least when we get through the tunnel we will be descending so we shouldn’t have the same problem.

We arrived at Slaithwaite and went for a walk around – another great little town/village.

You never know what you will find when you walk away from the canal - Welcome to Milnbridge.

Moored all by ourselves!

Looking back from the bridge - another impressive viaduct.

Heading out into the country.

Although the locks are narrow they are pretty deep.

Not a great photo but this is us going over an aqueduct with a waterfall on the river below!

And I thought it was a dalek up there from where I was standing!

This is Titanic Mill - another great mill development - the penthouse will set you back £225,000!

Now that's what I call outside bathing!

Fighting the wash - you can see the jet stream hitting the front of the boat as we approach the lock.

Geese and goats hanging out together!

Water coming at us from all angles!

Some lovely buildings in Slaithwaite.

That's the conservative club built as the conservative club.

And the bank which is home to Lloyds
