Friday 2 September 2016

Set off nice and early - 7.45am as we have James and Kat coming to stay tonight and we want to get to Scolars Green to meet them.

We had a stressful day cruising - it used to be nice sharing the canals with other people but having gotten used to having them to ourselves it was a shock to the system being reminded how some people can be!  First we had a couple that closed a swing bridge on us even though we were sounding the horn to let them know we were coming so we ended up being in the middle of the canal and I couldn't get off to go and operate the bridge so we had to reverse back and pull over.  Steve let them know he wasn't happy.  We later saw them at lock 11 in the flight of 12 broken down...

Also when we arrived at the flight they were just going into the first lock and there was another boat filling up with water so we asked if they were going down and they said they were so when they got ready to open the lock we decided to top up with water as we couldn't go anywhere.  When they were out the other side Steve went to refill the lock and I put the hose away.  Then another boat came up behind us and went to go in front of us so I told him that we were going down the flight and he had a go at me saying that you can't be in the queue for the lock and for water....Steve politely told him to button it!

Once through the flight we chugged on until we reached Scolars Green at about 3.30pm.  We didn't want to go any further as once past here we will hit Stoke-on-Trent and we don't want to moor there.

Jay and Kat arrived at 7ish and I’m pleased to say that after a stressful day we had a lovely evening!

Leaving Macclesfield.

Hovis Mill - it's now apartments but nice to see it still stands.

One of the snake bridges - the horses could cross over when the towpath changed from one side of the canal to the other without having to be detached from the boat.

The canal sits high up in many parts leading away from Macclesfield.

Looking back at the hills with the clouds hanging over the tops.

At the swing bridge - the start of the day's stress!

Smile honey!

Working our way down the Bosley Locks (12)

Looking back having reached the bottom - two boats broke down in the flight - glad we didn't.

Yes us too!

Lovely farm buildings.

Another impressive viaduct.

Over Watery Lane Aqueduct.

Nice weathervane - haven't seen one like this before.

Mow Cop Castle - an imitation ruin built in 1754.  1100ft above sea level.

We'll keep our eyes peeled for them!

Steve just said to me that he hadn't seen any really impressive houses for a while - then we came around the corner and this was there!  I'd say that's a pretty impressive house.

Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of Jay and Kat but here is the pub that provided the postcode so they could find us!
