Saturday 4 June 2016

It was overcast and humid today but still very warm.  We did a few jobs and set off about midday to complete our return journey back along the Middlewich Branch then back out onto the Shropshire Union.

Everyone we speak to tells us a different story about the Llangollen – some say it is busier midweek than at the weekends, others say they haven’t experienced it being busy so we decided to just make our way there.

Just as we arrived at the turn for the Llangollen so did four other boats but we managed to bag second place!

There were still a lot of boats moving around this morning despite it being change over day for the hire boats but there were even more late afternoon/early evening when all the new crews arrived for their holidays.

At the entrance to the Llangollen you are met with a flight of four locks – they are very narrow, I was speaking to a lady at a lock this morning, she and her husband had travelled all this way to do the Llangollen but because their boat was just over seven feet wide it would not fit in the locks so they had to abandon.

We got through two more locks after the initial four and decided to stop for the night.

Leaving our peaceful mooring.

Approaching the end of the Middlewich Branch - really glad we did this canal.

Heron fancies an ice cream!

Rejoining the Shropshire Union.

In the first lock of the four lock flight at the start of the Llangollen.  We have plenty of help - they are on the boats behind us lending a hand to hurry things along.

Come on smile - we've finally made it to the Llangollen!

|The coal boats moored up - I don't suppose they are very busy at this time of year.

Funky chimney.

No just a flat bottom and water!

Saturday night out in the sticks!

The sky is not looking as threatening as it sounds - we've had a few spots of rain and a few rumbles of thunder.

View from the lounge window towpath side!
