Tuesday 7 June 2016

Not quite as sunny today but still very warm.  We left Ellesmere at 9.45am in the hope that most people would have got up early and got on their way.  As we reached the main canal we saw three boats go past in the same direction as us!

We must have passed 50 boats going in the opposite direction today and only 4 of them were private!

Once away from Ellesmere the canal twists and turns – we came round one bend to see a boat grounded right in front of us and another one grounded under the trees coming the other way.

Eventually the boat in front of us got off the bottom so we threw the other boat a line and pulled him off the bottom – only problem was once he got going he forgot that he was tied to us until I shouted stop!  He nearly grounded again trying to untie the rope because it had been pulled so tight!

We chugged on past the entrance to the Montgomery Canal – we will do that on the way back.  An hour or two later we arrived at Chirk Aqueduct – wow what a view – this one is only 70ft high and has a railway viaduct running above and alongside it.  The ledge on the side is about two feet so you don’t feel vulnerable.  It is followed straight after by Chirk Tunnel 459 yards long.

We decided to stop before we got to the Pontcysyllte aqueduct – we’ll save that excitement for tomorrow!

Goodbye Ellesmere.

Good Golly...

Mowing the lawn!

Some of the lambs kneel down to eat!

That's the entrance to the Montgomery Canal - we'll do that on the way back.

A typical bridge - every other hire boat hits the top...

and the other half hit the bottom!

The first time we have seen cling-filming on this scale!

Hire boat chaos at the lock - a lady thanked us for leaving the lock gate open for them so Steve thanked them for making the bridge wider for us!

Wishing well.

Here we go over the Chirk Aqueduct

That's the River Ceiriog down there - we are now entering Wales!

The views are incredible and look at that viaduct.

Into Chirk Tunnel

and out the other end.

All this beautiful countryside and through the tunnel I looked behind and couldn't believe this factory appeared from nowhere!

Moored up for the night and the sun is breaking through.
