Monday 18 April 2016

A bit overcast this morning.  I have now called every boatyard on this stretch of the river and none of them have any space to moor our boat for a few days whilst we go back for my dad’s 70th (sorry dad!), visit Steve’s parents and play golf and catch up with friends.

We left the lovely villages of Pangbourne and Whitchurch-on-Thames, the river then meanders through Lower Basildon, Goring, Moulsford, North Stoke and Mongewell.  To use the description in the book for this stretch of river “A broad stretch of river, pleasant but unremarkable” I think they have summed it up pretty well.

We found a mooring in Wallingford and decided to walk to Benson Lock as one of the boatyards suggested that the lock keeper there may have some space that we can leave the boat.  Unfortunately she is on holiday for a couple of weeks so no joy there.

Rob called in the evening to see how we were getting on and we explained our dilemma – he knows this stretch of river very well as he used to have a boat moored at Clifton Hampden and suggested the Shillingford Bridge Hotel.  A phone call later and we have secured a mooring for the next four nights and booked dinner in the hotel with Rob and Claire tomorrow night – phew!

Having a scratch!

Under the toll bridge at Whitchurch-on-Thames

Through Goring.

Huge houses here but look at the gardens - a hill!

There are lots of pillboxes along this stretch of the Thames.

Human Greenhouse!

Opps - needs some mooring lessons!

Wonderful properties in this part of the world, even the annexes are grand.

Approaching Wallington Bridge.

Our neighbours for the night!
