Friday 6 May 2016

I had an early morning stroll to find a post box then whilst having our morning tea about 17 boats went past travelling in the same direction that we wanted to go in!  Oh well it has been nice weather this week and Monday was a bank holiday so a popular week for people to take off work.

We were heading for Braunston but someone that we bumped into at one of the locks told us that Timothy and Prunella were filming there today so we decided to stop before we got there in the middle of the countryside just past a little village called Lower Shuckburgh.

We had travelled 15 miles and been through 9 locks so we were ready to call it a day!  Sooo many hire boats on this canal but it is beautiful so you can understand why people want to have their holiday here.  We had a few hold ups with queues at the locks but not a problem as it was nice to chat to other people.

I forgot to mention that Steve had a smashing moment yesterday - we tried to copy what somebody else did at a lock and got up close to the gates whilst emptying it - Steve says that when I opened the sluices it pulled the boat forward???? Anyway the bump caused several bowls to jump out of the cupboard braking four and chipping two - I forgave him though - good excuse to go shopping :-)!

Leaving Fenny Compton - bit of a dull start to the day.

We think this crop is used for thatching roofs.

Isn't Spring a great season?

Fight!

As we approached this boat I said to Steve "what a nice mooring tucked out of the way" it was only as we passed it that we realised that it had no access to the canal- it was just sitting in a pond in the field!

All the way down the Oxford Canal are these knitted flowers tied onto the lock gates - nobody that I spoke to knows what the relevance is - one lady said when they hired a boat here 25 years ago they were here - it is obviously a tradition that is being kept alive.  I have googled it but can't find the reason why.

On top of the world!

Wait for me - I am supposed to be going ahead to open the lock!

Mud mud glorious mud!  Buffalo - that's a first.

Making our way down the Napton Flight.

The windmill at Napton on the Hill.

The entrance to the Grand Union - we came out of there in the Autumn last year.

Making progress.

Our garden for tonight - near Lower Shuckburgh.
