Wednesday 25 May 2016

The fridge is bare so Lou and I went off to the shops to stock up on supplies.  Fully stocked fridge and we set off from Penkridge at midday.

We seem to have stepped out of summer into Autumn - it's really cold today - I decided to walk between five of the locks to warm up and get some exercise.

We chugged through Gailey which is where we hired a Narrowboat for the first time with Harry about 12 years ago - Steve remembers quite a bit of it but the only thing I remember is the little canal side shop!

We arrived at the the turn off to the Shropshire Union at about 4.45pm where we had intended to stop but having arrived there we decide to carry on for a bit as it didn't feel right - signs saying "warning CCTV in operation" and "Warning Dogs roaming free" put us off!  So we chugged on to a place called Brewood (pronounced Brood) with the intention of popping into the village to have a look around and go for a drink but by the time we were showered and fed we were too tired to go – we’ll go and have a look tomorrow before we leave as it sounds interesting in the book.

Penkridge last night.

The church at Penkridge.

Slipping lines.

Great tree house - look at that spiral staircase.

Galley Maid - Lou thought she was on holiday...but she has to earn her keep!

The roundhouse canal side shop in Gailey - it hasn't changed in 12 years!

Wave!

These ducks were so funny - they ran along the bank to get the food we were throwing for them!

Young people having fun on the water - bet it wasn't so much fun for the instructors!

I hope "her" is the boat!

It's very rural here - this is a cut that used to be a tunnel - only room for one boat!

Turning into the Shropshire Union.

This is where we are - north of Wolverhampton.

Come on Lou - work those bingo wings.

The bridges along this stretch are very ornate - we are going to stop just the other side.

That's the church at Brewood (Brood) - we'll go have a look in the morning.
