Saturday 4 April 2015
Left March at 8.00am weather still overcast and cold. Through Ashline Lock, under the low bridges
and round the sharp left hand at Kings Dyke (3 point turn!). Had our first coming together with two ladies
on ‘Puddles’ – it’s their first time through the Middle Levels and it is a contact
sport after all!
Arrived at Stanground Lock, Peterborough at 12.30pm. On to the River Nene at 1pm. Through Orton, Alwalton, Water Newton,
Wansford and Yarwell Locks. The River
Nene is in flood, at most of the locks the river is flowing over the top of the
lock gates. You also have to leave the
downstream gates open so at each lock we are able to go straight in but then
have to empty the lock and leave the gates open. We have been told that there are not many places to moor on the Nene – so here we are on day three and braking the rules already – we have arrived at Yarwell Mill where there is a campsite that says they offer overnight mooring but there is nobody here – so we have gone through the lock and stopped on the mooring. 8pm another boat comes through the lock – it is now dark so he comes alongside too! We should have stopped at Wansford Station (Nene Valley Railway).
